What does it mean to have a stutter? Having a stutter does not negate ones intelligence. Scientists do not yet exactly know the cause of stuttering, but they believe that it is linked to genetics and the wiring of the brain. In fact, the IQ of a stutter is actually higher than a person who does not have a stutter. Stuttering can also be an indicator of other things such as autism, tourettes, and other disorders. When people think of a stutter they think of the person stuttering this particular way, "st-st-stutter," this is contrary to beliefs though. There are different way a person can stutter. They can prolong the beginning of the sound of a word, repeat the same few sounds of a word, have a block, and even use filler words to build momentum to get through their stutter (filler words are words such as "like" "as").
