Stuttering is not a widely known disorder, causing there to be assumptions and questions about stuttering.
What Causes Stuttering?
The cause of stuttering is still being studied, but scientists do that stuttering is hereditary. Stuttering takes place in the brain; scientists believe that the brain of a stutterer is wired differently than a person who does not stutter. Many people believe that since a person stutters, they have a different disorder like Autism or tourettes. This is partially true, stuttering is a common symptom of other disorders, but stuttering can also be a speech disorder on its own.
Is There A Cure?
There is no cure for stuttering, but there are treatments. The most effective treatment is speech therapy; in speech therapy you are taught tools on how to manage your stutter and how to cope with it. Another treatment is using tools such as the Speecheasy, a ear piece device, that reduces stuttering. This device however, does become less effective over time.
How Long Does It Last?
In the speech development stage, ages 2-5, stuttering will commonly occur. If the stutter persist through adolescence, it is most likely it will carry out into adulthood. Another way to tell the timeline of a stutter, is to look at how long a family member stutterers, if there is on. For example, my mother's stutter carried out into adulthood; this explains why my stutter is still persistent into my adolescent years and that I will most likely stutter into adulthood.
How Common Is Stuttering?
Stuttering affects 1% of the population. Stuttering is predominant in males; 1 out of 4 stutters in the stuttering population are females. This means that only 0.25% of the population are female stutterers.
Do Drugs or Alcohol Reduce Stuttering?
Alcohol and drugs have been proven to reduce onset stuttering. The way alcohol effects a person's stutter can be represented in a parabolic function. There is a "golden ratio" of of the amount of alcohol taken compared to the amount of stuttering. Alcohol is a suppressant, relieving the stutterer and the stutter. The effect of anxiety drugs work in the same manner.
